John Holt is one of the founders of unschooling. We recently have turned into unschoolers, following what the kids are interested in learning rather than making them do workbooks and read materials of our choosing. Children are natural learners. They are passionate, motivated beings. Our job is to be a facilitator and a mentor, not a dictator or authoritarian. These books have helped me to better understand this method of learning. Coming from a public school background and being around adults who are also from a public school background, I find myself in new territory as we explore this new world of unschooling. It will take some time to deschool, find other homeschooling friends, and come up with new creative endeavors. I feel that we will grow a lot as a family in this next year.
