Westside Homelearners Meet Up- Thanksgiving

This meet up was all about Thanksgiving. The kids sat in a circle and told each other what they were thankful for. Then they wrote it down on a tag and hung it on a branch. The older kids made a gratitude journal and designed and sewed the cover. Sage sewed corn on his and Dagan did chocolate on his. There were yummy treats and playing at the playground afterward.

Life of Fred Math

We just finished the first book of Life of Fred Math entitled "Apples". I heard great things about these books from many homeschooling blogs. The series teaches math from addition all the way through calculus. I think I will be learning a lot from these books and see math in a whole new light. For one thing, these books are funny, quirky and entertaining. The chapters are filled with funny stories of Fred and at the end of each chapter it is your turn to play. The boys write the answers to a few exercises. Hooray for incorporating reading, writing and math! And they also make math relevant to every day life.
So far the boys learned basic addition, deciduous vs. evergreen, about Archimedes, how to tell time, days of the week, skip counting, basic algebra and much more. Most of it was a review to them but only because we are starting at the beginning. We are looking forward to Fred's next adventure.
