Reading: Captain Underpants and More Books By Dav Pilkey

I was in the library about a month ago when I overheard the librarian recommending these books to a man whose son was a reluctant reader. Our boys love to read and like most boys they like their potty language which I condone only in the bathroom but when we realized that Captain Underpants books were written and illustrated by Dav Pilkey, who we love from his book the Hallo-wiener we decided to check it out. The stories are about two boys named George and Harold who love to write comic books, battle bullies and save the world. Their school principal is a mean man by the name of Mr. Krupp. They hypnotize him and when someone snaps their fingers he turns into Captain Underpants. But when someone pours water on his head he turns back into Mr. Krupp.

Though they characters are opposed to the lame authority figures working at the school, the books are hilarious and the boys enjoy both listening to me read them and reading on their own. We've also gone on to read The Dumb Bunnies books also by Dav Pilkey. So far we have read books 2, 8, and 9 in the Captain Underpants series. I find we can easily read one in just a day and the kids will actually sit riveted listening to them for a long time. They even like to act out their own scenes involving the characters.
